A rug hooker since the early 1980’s, Barbara Lukas is a member of the Ontario Rug
Hooking Guild , The International Guild of Handhooking Rugmakers, , and Vermont’s
Green Mountain Rug Hooking Guild. Her work has been exhibited at the Canadian Museum
of History, the Shelburne Museum in Burlington, Vermont, USA and appears in several
rug hooking books and magazines (See Rug Hooking Magazine for September/October 2012).
Since she retired in 2008 her love of fibers and textures has moved her to add multi-media
features to her rug hooking, and to explore other textile arts such as penny rugs
She is now importing felt supplies from Nepal and experimenting with new interpretations
of this fair trade medium. She also has an online business selling patterns and kits
which translate Canadian art into textile form. For example, she has a license from
the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia to make textile related patterns for four images by
the well known Nova Scotian folk artist, Maud Lewis.
